What Is Transesophageal Echocardiography?

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a specialized type of echocardiogram in which an ultrasound probe is gently guided into the esophagus to capture detailed images of the heart. Because the esophagus lies close to the heart, TEE provides clearer and more detailed images than standard transthoracic echocardiography.

TEE is especially useful for evaluating heart valves, chambers, and surrounding structures, as well as detecting conditions that may not be visible with other imaging techniques.

How the TEE Procedure Works

During a TEE procedure, the patient is typically given mild sedation to ensure comfort. A thin, flexible probe containing an ultrasound transducer is passed through the mouth into the esophagus. From this position, high-resolution images of the heart are captured in real time.

The procedure is carefully monitored by trained specialists and is generally well tolerated. Patients are closely observed throughout to ensure safety and comfort.

When Transesophageal Echocardiography May Be Recommended

TEE may be recommended when detailed imaging of the heart is needed to evaluate conditions such as heart valve disease, suspected blood clots, congenital heart abnormalities, infections of the heart lining, or unexplained stroke. It is also commonly used to guide certain interventional and structural heart procedures.
